The creation of Disney’s Animal Kingdom began with a dedicated team of seven Walt Disney Imagineers, led by Creative Portfolio Executive Joe Rohde. These visionary individuals embarked on a remarkable journey, collectively traveling more than 500,000 miles in their quest to capture the essence of life in the wild. This incredible feat is equivalent to circling the globe a staggering 20 times!

Tree of Life’s Carved Wonders

The iconic Tree of Life, the park’s centerpiece, boasts an astonishing 337 animal carvings. Ten artists and three Imagineers worked tirelessly for 18 months to bring these intricately detailed creatures to life. Remarkably, each sculpture had to be completed within a mere five to eight hours before the plaster hardened.

Leafy Marvel

Atop the Tree of Life are over 103,000 leaves, each measuring one foot in length. What makes them even more extraordinary is that they are crafted from a special plastic, adding to the tree’s unique charm.

Disney’s commitment to authenticity extends to its flora. More than 4 million trees, plants, shrubs, vines, epiphytes, grasses, and ground-coverings from around the world, except Antarctica, were thoughtfully planted throughout the park. Rising nearly 200 feet high and spanning 6.2 acres, this thrilling train ride offers guests an exhilarating race through the Himalayan mountains.

The rutted road on Kilimanjaro Safaris isn’t just a coincidence – it’s part of the park’s landscape design. The Animal Nutrition Center plays a vital role in providing high-quality nutrition as part of the veterinary services preventive health care program. The dedicated team prepares over 1,500 individual or group diets daily and delivers more than 10,000 pounds of food daily to the park’s animals, including those at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.
