How to Avoid Theme Park Burnout

There are stages to any vacation of length, from the giddy Arrival Day to the sadness of the Departure Day. There are feelings and thoughts that can get us through each occasion, but what happens during the times that you’re just “done”.

It’s important to recognize what happens when you reach your limit AND how to turn things around.

How to Avoid Theme Park Burnout

Just a quick note before we head into this topic, as it’s integral to state this up front. These suggestions are things that work for US and may not necessarily work for every single individual of every age. I’ll do my best to generalize, but if it’s not something that you know will work…just skip to the next one:)

HOW CAN BURNOUT HAPPEN?

Let’s start with the basics ahead of sharing ideas on how to deal with it.

  • Over-Stimulated
    • Disney World is highly immersive and stimulating, from music tempo to lights and general ambiance.
  • Bad Day
    • Ever had a bad day with NO rhyme or reasons? This happens to the best of us, even if we’re at the most magical place on earth!
  • Home-Sickness
    • Are you missing your pet?
    • Are you missing consistent wifi?
    • Friends/Family on your mind?

It’s important to recognize the reason(s) that you could be feeling burned out and come to terms with it. Being open and communicative to your situation will allow others to understand and cope.

BASIC NEEDS

This is a great place to begin, as it’s the most common way to stay ahead of the feelings that come with burnout.

  • Eat Well – full meals with a variety of mains, sides and sizes.
  • Stay Hydrated – I know I know…but it’s easier said than done.
  • Wearing weather-appropriate clothing
  • Well Rested? Do you need a nap? 😉

IDEAS TO COMBAT BURNOUT AT A THEME PARK

RESORT DAY

Scheduling a half-day or a full-day to explore nearby hotels or resorts will help you re-center your energy level.

If you’re at Disney World, this is incredibly easy to plan for, as you can get some great Advanced Dining Reservations at the Resorts.

TAKE A COUPLE HOURS AND PLUG IN

It’s amazing how some time by yourself in the theme parks will help you relax, as you can plug in with podcasts or music while wandering around at your own pace and see the things that you want to do.

We do this every trip, as even though it’s usually just the two of us….we do theme parks differently.

  • I love grabbing photos and rushing around the see as much as possible
  • My partner likes to wander and see things that she wants to see without worrying about wasting time.

GO TO THE GYM

Routine is incredibly important, so if you’re doing something at home…like running or hitting the gym….stick to that schedule! Don’t be afraid to schedule around health, as it’ll only help your balance!

OUTSIDE THE BUBBLE

Disney World and Universal Orlando are both incredibly immersive and intense experiences, so maybe it’s planning a day “outside the bubble”. We’ve really enjoyed jumping in an UBER and heading to the Orlando Premium Outlets, as you can get a Starbucks and wander around without seeing Mickey or Harry Potter everywhere;)

CONNECT WITH YOUR PET

Did you leave your dog or cat with a professional pet sitter (or reliable family/friend)? Have them install Voxer and ask for daily photos/videos. It’s so easy to get a cheap smile by seeing your little furry friend!

Hope this was helpful! Although it was focused around Walt Disney World and Central Florida, the ideas and thoughts are able to be used on any vacation. Remember to OVER-COMMUNICATE with your group, as it’s easier to be accommodating when you know that you’re in a funk instead of having someone wonder if they did something.

Be open, be understanding and just be yourself…it’s more fun that way!
