Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana has been enchanting guests at EPCOT’s World Nature since October 16, 2023, making it one of the newest attractions to splash onto the scene during the park’s massive transformation.
While Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure have gotten most of the attention during EPCOT’s overhaul, this charming water play trail deserves way more recognition! It’s the first Disney Parks attraction based on Moana, and unlike typical rides with vehicles and tracks, it allows you to set your own pace and choose your own adventure (wet or dry). The attraction beautifully combines education about the water cycle with interactive play elements that change throughout the day and with the weather.
This refreshing experience represents a new direction for EPCOT attractions, blending storytelling with environmental education in a way that feels both entertaining and meaningful. As the park continues its transformation, Journey of Water stands out as something genuinely unique in the Disney Parks portfolio.

1. It’s Built on Historical Disney Ground
Journey of Water stands where part of Innoventions West once welcomed guests. That location carries significant Disney history – Innoventions (and its predecessor CommuniCore) represented the original EPCOT Center’s vision of showcasing cutting-edge technology. In a poetic transition, this space now demonstrates the importance of natural systems rather than technological ones. The attraction beautifully bridges EPCOT’s past focus on innovation with its new emphasis on the natural world and sustainability.
2. Te Fiti Is an Engineering Marvel
The stunning 16-foot-tall Te Fiti figure that anchors the attraction isn’t just a static sculpture – she’s a living, breathing topiary masterpiece! Disney’s horticulture team maintains over 3,000 different plant pieces that make up her form, with carefully selected varieties that will continue to flourish throughout Florida’s changing seasons. The plants are arranged in a steel frame and feature an advanced irrigation system hidden within. Just like in the film where Te Fiti brings life to the islands, her presence here literally brings greenery and life to EPCOT.

3. There’s a Strategic Approach to Getting Wet
The attraction has designated “splash zones” where interaction with water is guaranteed, but there are also “surprise” water elements that activate randomly or based on guest interactions. For maximum refreshment, visit between 11am-3pm when the Florida sun is strongest and the water features are typically operating at full capacity. The area near the jumping water jets provides the most reliable splashing opportunities if you’re looking to cool off!
4. Hidden Characters Are Everywhere
While Te Fiti is impossible to miss, many guests walk right past other characters from the film. Disney has cleverly integrated Pua the pig, Hei Hei the rooster, and even the Kakamora into rock formations throughout the path. Following Hei Hei’s chicken footprints (which are actually embedded in the pathway) leads to a small carved figure of him hiding near one of the water features. There are approximately a dozen hidden characters throughout the attraction (both on land and in the water), rewarding those who take their time exploring.

5. It Uses Advanced Water Conservation Technology
In a brilliant bit of Disney innovation (and environmental responsibility), Journey of Water operates on a closed-loop water system that recycles nearly 100% of the water used throughout the day. The attraction even collects rainwater during Florida’s frequent storms, filters it, and incorporates it into the experience. This commitment to conservation isn’t just for show – it’s estimated that this system saves thousands of gallons of water annually compared to traditional fountain systems.
6. The “Music Water” Has Multiple Melodies
One of the most magical interactive elements allows guests to “conduct” water that plays musical notes as it shoots from jets in the ground. The “rain harp” doesn’t just play random notes – it’s actually performing musical sequences programmed into this feature, including simplified versions of tunes from Moana itself. These interactive musical water elements are part of what makes Journey of Water such a uniquely engaging experience.

7. It Connects to The Seas Pavilion By Design
The trail isn’t randomly placed – it creates a deliberate pathway that guides guests from the center of EPCOT toward The Seas pavilion, physically representing water’s journey to the ocean. This thoughtful layout reinforces the educational narrative about the water cycle while also helping with crowd flow through this area of the park. It’s a perfect example of Disney’s approach to using physical space to enhance storytelling.
8. Even the Trash Cans Tell a Story

Disney Imagineers are famous for their meticulous attention to detail, and Journey of Water proves this extends even to the most practical elements – including trash cans! Throughout the attraction, you’ll notice that the trash receptacles aren’t just standard park bins. They’re carefully designed with Polynesian-inspired patterns matching the attraction’s overall aesthetic, featuring wave motifs and textures reminiscent of Moana’s voyaging culture. The colors blend seamlessly with the surrounding rockwork, and some even incorporate the spiral symbol that represents Moana’s journey in the film. This approach to themed trash cans is classic Disney – recognizing that every element, no matter how utilitarian, is an opportunity to extend storytelling and maintain the immersive environment.
9. The Trail Reveals Different Stages of the Water Cycle
As you travel through Journey of Water, you’ll pass through nine distinct sections that represent different stages of the water cycle: Rain, Stream, Wetland, Spring, Land, Lake, River, Ocean, and Sky. Each area features unique interactive elements and educational signage explaining that particular stage. Disney Imagineer Zach Riddley has explained that these experiences “guide guests through the cycle of water in fun and engaging ways to tell our story of the vital link we share with water across our planet.”

10. You Can Choose Your Level of Wetness
Contrary to what some might expect, you don’t have to get soaked to enjoy Journey of Water. The attraction features a “dry path” option throughout most of its length, allowing guests who prefer to stay dry to still experience the storytelling and visuals. One of the most impressive features is a waterfall curtain that parts as you approach, allowing you to walk through without getting wet at all! This accessibility allows everyone to enjoy the attraction on their own terms.
11. It Transforms Dramatically From Day to Night
While most guests experience Journey of Water during daylight hours, the attraction undergoes a remarkable transformation after sunset. Special lighting effects illuminate Te Fiti and the water features, creating an entirely different atmosphere. The water elements that produce playful splashes during the day become elegant, choreographed displays of illuminated water at night. The peaceful ambiance of glowing water features against the nighttime sky creates a magical experience that perfectly complements EPCOT’s evening atmosphere.
12. The Attraction Faced Significant Construction Delays
Originally scheduled to open in 2021, Journey of Water was delayed for over two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The construction timeline shifted multiple times as Disney navigated pandemic-related challenges. Interestingly, this delay ended up being somewhat fortuitous – the attraction’s eventual opening on October 16, 2023, coincided exactly with The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary, making it part of Disney’s centennial celebration.

13. Cultural Consultants Ensured Authenticity
Just as with the original film, Disney worked with cultural consultants from the Pacific Islands to ensure authentic representation throughout Journey of Water. These experts advised on everything from the rock formations and water features to the patterns and symbols used in the attraction’s design. This commitment to cultural authenticity has been a hallmark of Disney’s approach since the making of Moana and continues in this physical extension of the film’s world.
14. The Rock Work Was Created Using Specialized Techniques
The impressive rockwork throughout Journey of Water was created using a technique called “shotcrete,” where concrete is sprayed onto metal frameworks to create natural-looking rock formations. Disney Imagineers then hand-carved and painted each surface to achieve the specific look of Motunui’s volcanic landscape. The rock formations were designed not just for aesthetics but also to hide technical elements like water pumps, electrical components, and lighting fixtures – keeping the magic intact while maintaining the attraction’s functionality.

15. The Waterfall Technology Is More Advanced Than It Appears
The water curtain that parts as guests approach uses sophisticated sensor technology to detect movement and precisely control water flow. The system needs to respond quickly and accurately while maintaining the illusion that the water is moving naturally. Behind the scenes, high-pressure pumps, specialized nozzles, and computerized controls work in perfect synchronization to create this magical effect that allows guests to walk through a waterfall without getting wet.
16. There Are Dedicated Restrooms and Changing Areas
Unlike many outdoor areas in Disney parks, Journey of Water features its own dedicated restroom facilities located about halfway through the experience. These facilities include changing areas specifically designed for guests who might want to change into or out of swimwear, making it easier to adjust your level of wetness throughout your day at EPCOT. This thoughtful addition shows Disney’s consideration for the practical needs of guests enjoying a water-based attraction.

17. The Attraction Uses Special UV-Resistant Materials
Florida’s intense sun and frequent rain present significant challenges for outdoor attractions. Journey of Water uses specialized UV-resistant materials for all decorative elements and signage to prevent fading and deterioration. The rockwork is sealed with multiple layers of protective coatings, and the plantings were carefully selected for their ability to withstand both intense sunlight and the constant presence of water. These material choices help ensure the attraction will maintain its appearance for years to come.
18. It Features Some of EPCOT’s Best Photo Opportunities
Journey of Water offers some of the most Instagram-worthy photo spots in EPCOT. The massive Te Fiti figure provides a stunning backdrop, especially with Spaceship Earth visible in the distance. Another popular photo spot features a perfect frame of the monorail track through rock formations as trains pass by. Disney even considered sight lines and lighting angles when designing the attraction to ensure great photo opportunities throughout the day – another example of their attention to detail in the guest experience.

19. The Water Features Adjust Based on Weather Conditions
The interactive water elements throughout Journey of Water are controlled by a sophisticated system that monitors weather conditions and adjusts accordingly. On particularly hot days, the water features may increase their activity to provide more cooling opportunities. During cooler weather or light rain, some features may reduce their intensity. And during severe weather or lightning warnings, certain elements can be temporarily deactivated for safety while allowing the attraction to remain partially operational.
20. It Incorporates Accessibility Features Throughout the Design
Journey of Water was designed from the ground up with accessibility in mind. Beyond the obvious dry path options, the attraction includes features like textured walkways to assist visually impaired guests, informational signs with braille, and interactive elements positioned at various heights to accommodate guests in wheelchairs. The design team worked closely with accessibility experts to ensure that guests of all abilities could experience the core elements of the attraction, making it one of the most inclusive experiences in EPCOT.
