When you spend as much time in Walt Disney World as I do, the opportunity for laughter is everywhere. While Disney is known for its magical moments and heartwarming experiences, it’s often the unexpected laughs that become my favorite memories. Sometimes it’s a planned Imagineer’s sight-gag, and other times it’s just taking a moment to share a joke with fellow guests. These are some of the things that really made me crack up at Disney World.
1. Starbucks “You Are Here” Mugs for Star Wars Planets

If you’ve ever been to a Starbucks, you’ve likely seen the collectible “You Are Here” mugs with illustrations of the icons of that city or state. Certain super-popular tourist locations may also have their own You Are Here mug, like at Times Square in New York City. Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios each have their own uniquely themed mug as well.
However, if you look closely at some of the mugs, you’ll notice that there are special “You Are Here” mugs hiding between the ones for the parks. Specifically, mugs for Naboo, Tatooine, Hoth, and Batuu. Yes, Starbucks’ “You Are Here” mugs exist for many of the planets seen in Star Wars films!
The first time I spotted these, I did a double-take. “You are here… on Tatooine?” I remember thinking. “Well, I guess technically I am in Galaxy’s Edge, so…” The subtle humor of these mugs still makes me smile every time I see them. As a former Cast Member who’s seen almost everything Disney has to offer, finding these little jokes hidden in plain sight is such a treat.
These Star Wars mugs make fantastic gifts for the Star Wars fan in your life who also loves coffee! They’re usually available at the Starbucks locations within the parks, but they do sell out quickly, so grab one when you see it.

2. Snake Plant in a Boot
This one made me giggle a lot when I saw it. It took a minute (honestly, I thought “why is there a plant in the shoe?”) but when I got it, I REALLY got it.
I remember picking it up and, in my terrible Woody impression, exclaimed “There’s a snake plant in my boot!” Clearly some Disney merchandise designer and I share the same sense of humor.
You can find these clever little planters in various shops throughout Disney Springs and sometimes in the parks. Trust me on this – they make for both a great conversation piece and a constant source of amusement in your home. Every time a guest asks about it, you get to do your best Woody impression!
3. Kevin from “Up” Walking Through Animal Kingdom

If you’ve spent any time in Animal Kingdom recently, you might have been lucky enough to encounter Kevin, the colorful bird from the Pixar film “Up.” What makes this character experience so hilarious is how the Cast Members playing the handlers interact with this massive, awkward bird.
Kevin walks around seemingly oblivious to everything, occasionally pecking at guests’ heads or becoming fascinated with random objects. The handlers desperately try to keep Kevin “on track” while apologizing for the bird’s behavior.
The first time I saw Kevin rounding a corner in Discovery Island, a child near me yelled “IT’S A DINOSAUR!” and Kevin immediately turned and stared at the child for what felt like an uncomfortably long time. The handler just shrugged as if to say, “What can you do?” It was comedy gold.
If you’re visiting Animal Kingdom, keep your eyes peeled for Kevin. There’s no set schedule for appearances, which makes spotting this colorful bird even more special when it happens.
4. The Infamous Duck on Parade
One of my absolute favorite spontaneous Disney moments happened during the Festival of Fantasy parade at Magic Kingdom.
The parade was in full swing – dancers moving in perfect synchronization, music blaring, characters waving – when suddenly, a regular duck from the park waddled right into the middle of the parade route. This duck, completely unfazed by the spectacle around it, took its sweet time crossing the street while thousands of guests watched.
The best part? The Cast Members couldn’t do anything but wait! For about 30 seconds, this ordinary duck became the star of Disney’s premier daytime parade. The crowd went wild, cheering and laughing as this uninvited performer took center stage.
You can’t plan these moments, but they’re often the ones you remember most. (And somewhere, there’s a duck telling its duck friends about the time all those humans cheered for it.)
5. The “70-ft Drop” on Pirates (Backseat Driving)

One of my favorite things to do is to get on Pirates of the Caribbean and just as the ride is starting, turn to my friends or family and loudly say, “This is the one with the 70-foot drop, right?” Just to make everyone else on board wonder, “Is there really a 70-foot drop?!”
The panicked looks on first-time riders’ faces are priceless. After all, the ride does start with a small drop in the dark, but it’s nowhere near 70 feet. Just a gentle 8-foot descent into the pirate-filled caverns below.
I’ve been doing this for years now, and while it might be a little mean (sorry, first-timers!), the reactions are always worth it. Sometimes other guests who know the ride will play along, saying things like, “Yeah, and it’s completely vertical too!” My friends always give me that “not again” look, but they can’t help laughing when they see the worried expressions around us.
If you’re on Pirates with a first-timer, please don’t actually scare them too much. The little drop at the beginning is surprising enough for some folks!

BONUS: Inside Jokes for Disney Adults

Let’s talk about those special jokes that only true Disney adults will understand – the ones that make us laugh while others just look confused. For me, one of the funniest is the “Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas” merchandise.
If you’ve ever ridden the monorail at Walt Disney World, you know that automated announcement that plays: “Please stand clear of the doors. Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas.” For some reason, this simple safety message has become a cult classic among Disney fans.
The first time I saw coffee mugs with nothing but “Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas” printed on them, I absolutely lost it in the middle of the Emporium. My partner had no clue why I was giggling like I had found the best possible thing ever…but I knew that I must have it!
Disney has fully leaned into this inside joke, putting that phrase on everything from t-shirts to home decor. It’s like a secret handshake – when someone recognizes the reference and smiles, I know I’ve found my people.
There’s something oddly satisfying about these Disney adult inside jokes. They’re like little breadcrumbs that only the truly dedicated will pick up on. I’ve seen couples do the “Andy’s coming!” drop in the parks (though Cast Members aren’t supposed to play along anymore), guests quietly humming “it’s a small world” to torture their friends, and people who reflexively use Disney quotes in everyday conversations.
If you want to spot a fellow Disney adult in the wild, just quietly say “por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas” and see who turns around with a knowing smile. Trust me on this one – it works every time.
Laughter is Part of the Magic
These funny moments at Disney World remind me that sometimes the most memorable parts of a vacation aren’t the big attractions or expensive experiences – they’re the small, unexpected moments that make you laugh. Having worked as a Cast Member in the Canadian Pavilion back in 2007-2008, I’ve seen firsthand how these little moments of joy are what really make the Disney experience special.
Whether it’s an intentional joke from Disney’s creative team, a spontaneous animal encounter, or just having fun with your travel companions, don’t forget to look for the humor during your next trip. Take a moment between rushing to Lightning Lane reservations to appreciate the funny little details. After all, Walt himself said the parks were built for people to find happiness and laughter.
