Disney Springs Hidden Stories — Entrepreneurs Behind Magic

10 Fascinating Brand Backstories That Make Disney Springs More Than Just a Shopping Destination

If you’ve ever strolled through Disney Springs wondering about the stories behind those beautiful storefronts, you’re in for a treat! As someone who’s spent countless hours exploring every corner of Disney property, I’ve collected some of the most fascinating backstories of the real entrepreneurs who brought their dreams to “the Springs.”

Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’: A True Florida Homecoming

This place has one of my favorite backstories in all of Disney Springs! Chef Art Smith (who was Oprah’s personal chef for years, by the way) named this restaurant “Homecomin'” because it literally marks his return to where his Disney career began.

Back in the early 1980s, Art was part of the Disney College Program and actually performed with the Disney World choir almost exactly where his restaurant now stands! Talk about a full-circle moment.

Those incredible biscuits they serve? They’re based on his grandmother’s recipe that he’s been perfecting since childhood. If you look near the entrance, you’ll spot a photo of her. And here’s a money-saving tip: hit their “Shine Bar” during happy hour (3-6pm weekdays) for half-price moonshine cocktails and discounted appetizers. I always get the thigh high chicken biscuits – they’re cheaper than an entrée but totally filling!

Gideon’s Bakehouse: From Home Kitchen to Cult Following

This place has some of the most devoted fans I’ve ever seen (I’ve literally witnessed people waiting 3+ hours for a cookie). What many don’t know is that owner Steve Lewis named the bakery after a mysterious antique cookbook he found with the signature “Gideon” inside.

The Gothic Victorian aesthetic isn’t just for show – it’s based on an elaborate fictional backstory about a child baker in the late 1800s. Even the half-pound cookies have their own lore! The space is tiny by Disney standards because it started as a small local business with just a single employee before Disney discovered them at their East End Market location in Orlando.

Wondermade: Florida’s Marshmallow Magic

Jenn and Nathan Clark started making handcrafted marshmallows in their home kitchen just a few miles from Disney property. What began as a Christmas gift idea (Nathan gave Jenn a candy thermometer with a note saying they should make marshmallows) has grown into one of the most charming success stories at Disney Springs.

Their “Marshmallows Across America” collection featuring 50 unique state-inspired flavors was actually born from conversations with international guests at their Disney Springs location! I always grab the Florida Key Lime flavor when I visit (it pairs perfectly with a hot chocolate from Ghirardelli if you’re visiting during one of Orlando’s three “winter” days).

Little Words Project: Bracelets with Purpose

Little Words Project (Image: Disney)

When founder Adriana Carrig was a sorority pledge in college, she created beaded bracelets for her sisters as symbols of friendship. Drawing inspiration from her mother’s Spanish saying “Querer es Poder” (If you want it, you can achieve it), she transformed this simple idea into a movement promoting kindness and self-love.

The Disney Springs location is actually their most successful store! If you’re looking for an affordable souvenir that carries meaning, check out their exclusive Disney Parks line. The “Home” bracelet with the castle charm is not only adorable but about half the price of most park souvenirs. (Plus, it won’t melt like that Mickey ice cream bar you were considering bringing home.)

Wine Bar George: The Master Sommelier’s Dream

Did you know Wine Bar George is the only wine bar in Florida owned by a Master Sommelier? George Miliotes is one of only about 230 Master Sommeliers worldwide, and he created this place as a tribute to his family’s restaurant business.

The building itself tells a story – it’s designed to look like a converted Florida wine-making warehouse from the 1900s, complete with “aged” wooden beams. If you visit (and trust me, you should), head upstairs to “The Basket” for their famous Frozcato Mimosa and ask the staff about the fictional date carved into the staircase railing. It’s part of Disney’s elaborate backstory for the entire Springs area!

Erin McKenna’s Bakery NYC: Breaking Barriers with Baking

When Erin McKenna’s son was diagnosed with severe food allergies, she couldn’t find bakeries that could accommodate his needs. So she created her own! Her bakery specializes in vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly treats that actually taste amazing (the donut holes are my weakness).

What many visitors don’t realize is that Disney specifically sought out Erin’s bakery to ensure all guests, regardless of dietary restrictions, could enjoy something sweet. If you have food allergies or sensitivities, this place is an absolute must-visit. Pro tip: they sometimes sell out of their most popular items by late afternoon, so stop by before 2pm if possible.

Eet by Maneet Chauhan: A Culinary Journey

Celebrity chef Maneet Chauhan’s restaurant at Disney Springs is one of the newest additions, but the story behind it spans continents. Growing up in India, Maneet was often the only girl in her school who dreamed of becoming a chef rather than following more traditional career paths.

The restaurant’s design incorporates elements from her personal journey – those decorative bangles on the wall aren’t just pretty accessories; they represent cultural elements from her heritage. When dining here, ask your server about the significance of the spice blends used in each dish – there’s often a family story behind them!

The Polite Pig: From Food Truck to Disney Fame

This is such a cool local success story! Husband-and-wife team James and Julie Petrakis were already Orlando culinary darlings with their Winter Park restaurants (The Ravenous Pig and Cask & Larder) when Disney came calling.

What many visitors don’t know is that The Polite Pig concept started as a food truck experiment before Disney offered them a permanent spot at Disney Springs. They’re one of the few true local Orlando businesses to make the leap to Disney property.

Here’s my favorite hack when eating there: skip the regular menu and order from their “butcher board” section. For about $22, you get to pick any two meats plus a side – it’s enough food for two people to share unless you’re absolutely starving. Their bourbon selection is also ridiculously good (over 60 varieties!), and from 3-6pm they do $5 bourbon tastings that include three different samples. It’s one of the best values in all of Disney Springs!

Crystal Arts by Arribas Brothers: Glass Artisans from Spain

Did you know those incredible glass artisans at Crystal Arts have a connection to Walt Disney himself? The Arribas brothers (Tomas and Alfonso) were discovered by Walt at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. He was so impressed with their traditional Spanish glass-blowing techniques that he personally invited them to open a shop on Disneyland’s Main Street.

Now their family continues the tradition at Disney Springs, where you can actually watch artisans create incredible glass pieces right before your eyes. (Seriously, time your visit between 1-5pm when they’re usually doing demonstrations – it’s like getting a free show!)

Here’s an insider tip most people miss: if you’re celebrating something special (birthday, anniversary, whatever), mention it to the artists. They sometimes create small complimentary glass trinkets for special occasions. My niece got a tiny glass rose on her birthday last year, and it was completely free!

Joffrey’s Coffee: From Tampa Shop to Disney’s Official Brew

Would you believe this coffee empire started as a tiny Tampa shop in 1984? Joffrey’s magical Disney journey kicked off in 1995 with just ONE test location at Typhoon Lagoon. Now they’re Disney’s official coffee supplier worldwide!

I remember when they only had a handful of kiosks (and honestly, the coffee wasn’t anything special back then). But they’ve completely transformed into a true Disney essential. Their roastmasters actually work directly with Disney’s chefs to create unique blends for different park areas. How cool is that?

Their flagship store at Disney Springs in The Landing is where the magic really happens. That’s where you can get those amazing Mickey latte art creations you see all over Instagram. Pro tip: visit between 9-11am on weekdays when most people are rushing to the theme parks – you’ll have practically no wait and can actually chat with their baristas who are FULL of Disney knowledge.

Bonus Tip: Finding the Hidden Springs History

Disney Springs (Image: Dustin Fuhs)

Disney’s Imagineers created an elaborate fictional backstory for all of Disney Springs, centered around a made-up founder named Dr. Elias Greenwood who “discovered” the natural springs in the 1800s. Throughout the entire complex, you’ll find construction dates carved into buildings, faded “advertisements” painted on walls, and other details that create a cohesive historical narrative.

Next time you visit, look for the small plaque near the actual springs that explains some of this history. It’s a perfect spot for photos in the morning before the crowds arrive, and knowing the backstory makes wandering through the shopping district so much more fun than just seeing it as a mall!

Remember, almost every shop and restaurant at Disney Springs has both its real entrepreneur’s story AND a fictional Disney backstory woven into its design. Taking time to learn these tales makes your visit so much richer than just shopping and eating. (And gives you something interesting to talk about while waiting in line for that Gideon’s cookie!)
