Save Money on Your Disney Trip: 5 Essential Items to Buy Before You Go

When preparing for a memorable Disney trip, it’s essential to consider not only the fun and excitement but also the potential expenses – which can definitely add up if you let them. To help you make the most of your budget, we’ve compiled a list of five must-have items to pick up before embarking on your Disney adventure. By investing in these items ahead of time, you’ll save money and ensure a stress-free and enjoyable experience.

From comfortable footwear and sun protection to convenient breakfast snacks, souvenirs, and practical ponchos, these pre-trip buys are the keys to maximizing your savings.

Comfortable Shoes: A Wise Investment

Buying a pair of good shoes before your vacation is a savvy decision that will save you from pain, discomfort, and unexpected expenses. Whether it’s blister remedies, replacement shoes, or specialty footwear, being prepared will prevent you from having to purchase pricey items at your hotel during your trip.

For perspective, I tend to look towards brands like Vessi and adidas while avoiding brands that may take time to “break in”.

Jill tends to wear her Tom’s for a month before a trip, as they have been known to cause issues in the heat and humidity of Florida.

Stay Sunburn-Free with a Hat

Florida’s scorching heat can lead to unpleasant sunburns (and really funny tan lines). Avoid unnecessary expenses at resort gift shops and Walgreens by investing in a hat.

By shielding yourself from the sun’s harmful rays, you’ll sidestep the need for expensive cooling gels and hydration products, ultimately saving money and enjoying a more comfortable experience. Now this isn’t saying that you won’t want to pack those exact cooling gels in your suitcase, but a hat can definitely help the pain.

I’m a hat guy, with more than 60 in the collection, but we did end up bringing a running hat for Jill – as she has a ponytail.

Breakfast & Snacks: Plan Ahead for Savings

Don’t let early morning hunger drain your wallet at Disney. Bring along your own breakfast and snacks to save on overpriced items.

The cost of a simple cup of grapes can easily reach $5 at the resort. By being prepared and packing your own sustenance, you’ll have more control over your expenses and avoid unnecessary spending during those in-between meal times.

It’ll still happen, but why not enjoy a good memorable Disney snack in the Magic Kingdom than something that you can pack…like a granola bar or a pop-tart.

Pre-Purchase Souvenirs for Smart Savings

We all love capturing the magic of Disney consumerism with souvenirs, but impulse purchases can quickly add up. Pre-buying souvenirs ahead of time allows you to shop with a clear mind and avoid overspending in the heat of the moment.

We’re also a fan of budget allocation through items versus cost. I know in a single trip to WDW that I’ll want to get a shirt, a pin, a mug and a piece of art. As I’m also a giver, so letting Jill know ahead of time that I’m going to be getting her a Loungefly, a shirt and a set of Mickey Ears actually stops the pressure and stress of trying to convince someone in the moment to let you buy them something.

Yes, I actually have to convince Jill to let me buy her stuff…but that’s an article all on its own.

Practical Ponchos: Weather-Proof Your Budget

Unpredictable weather can put a damper on your Disney experience. Rather than purchasing expensive ponchos at the park, bring your own. By having at least one poncho per person, you’ll stay dry during unexpected showers while keeping your vacation budget intact.
