Disney World Do-Overs: Top Mistakes to Avoid on Your Next Vacation

Planning the perfect Disney World vacation can feel overwhelming – there are countless decisions to make before, during, and even after your trip. As someone who’s made their fair share of Disney planning mishaps, I’m sharing the most valuable lessons learned from our past visits. Trust me, you’ll want to know these before your next Disney adventure!

1. The Dreaded Nap Incident

Ever been so excited about your Disney trip that you completely exhaust yourself? Been there! On day two of one of our vacations, travel fatigue and excitement caught up with us at Magic Kingdom. We thought we’d be smart and head back to Pop Century for a quick refresh before lunch at Art of Animation.

Spoiler alert: We didn’t set an alarm.

This rookie mistake created a domino effect that led to a very late lunch… right before our early dinner reservation at Kona Cafe in the Polynesian Resort. Let’s just say mixing up meal times at Disney isn’t the magical experience you’re looking for!

2. The “I’ll Buy It Later” Shopping Regret

Here’s a golden rule of Disney shopping: If you see something you love, buy it immediately! We learned this lesson the hard way after spotting the perfect pair of Belle ears and thinking, “Oh, these must be everywhere.”

Narrator: They were not.

We spent the next few days checking what felt like every shop on property, only to leave empty-handed. Don’t let FOMO turn into reality – if you spot that perfect souvenir, grab it!

This also happened with the above Halloween 2022 pins, as we saw the design with the haunted mansion in every store on September 15th, and by the 16th they were taken off stage across property – never to be seen again.

3. Resort Choice Mistakes That Cost More Than Money

The False Economy of Off-Property Stays

My parents thought they were being clever by booking a hotel near Disney Springs that saved them $15 per night. The reality? They spent more time (and money) walking 35 minutes to Disney Springs when it should have been a quick 7-minute drive.

Sometimes saving money actually costs you your vacation time!

The All-Star Sports Situation

We decided to stay at All-Star Sports because it was the cheapest option and wanted to compare it to Pop Century. Big mistake! The resort was so far from everything that we spent more time on buses than enjoying the parks.

Pro tip: Research resort locations carefully – your time is valuable!

That said, we’ve had great experiences with budget-friendly alternatives like Orbit One and Sonder, which allowed us to redirect savings toward dining and merchandise. It’s all about strategic planning!

4. The Early Flight Dilemma

While I’ll probably keep booking early flights (old habits die hard), here’s what you should know: Arriving at MCO before 10 AM usually means waiting until 3 or 4 PM for your room to be ready. Plus, early arrivals often coincide with peak stress levels from travel delays and vacation hiccups.

My advice? If you do take an early flight, treat your arrival day as a bonus and go with the flow. Don’t overplan – your stress levels will thank you!

5. The Disney Bus Wait Time Trap

Here’s a simple rule: Don’t wait more than 15 minutes for a Disney bus. Just don’t.

We once waited 45 minutes at the Contemporary after Magic Kingdom fireworks because the digital schedule kept pushing back arrival times. The solution? We finally called an Uber, which arrived in 3 minutes and got us to the Coca-Cola Store within 15 minutes!

  2. Budget extra for impulse purchases of must-have merchandise
  3. Research resort locations thoroughly before booking
  4. Consider transportation costs and time when choosing accommodations
  5. Have ride-share apps ready as a backup transportation plan
  6. Build flexibility into your arrival day schedule
