Disney Restaurant That Made History Twice — Why It Matters

If you’ve been following my Disney journey over the years, you know I’ve got a soft spot for Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. After eating my way through pretty much every Disney restaurant (Crystal Palace, I’m looking at you with side-eye), I can confidently say that V&A remains in a league of its own. While the news is out that Victoria & Albert’s has retained its prestigious MICHELIN star for 2025, let’s explore what this culinary achievement really means for Walt Disney World as a whole.

The Star Shines On

On April 18, 2025, the MICHELIN Guide made it official – Victoria & Albert’s remains the first and only restaurant owned and operated by a U.S. theme park to hold a coveted MICHELIN star. Trust me, this isn’t just another Disney accolade to hang on the wall – this is the culinary equivalent of winning an Oscar!

If you’re not familiar with the MICHELIN rating system (and no, it’s not related to the monorail tires!), it’s widely considered the gold standard for dining excellence worldwide. Anonymous inspectors evaluate restaurants based on five strict criteria: product quality, mastery of cooking techniques, harmony of flavors, the personality of the chef as reflected in the cuisine, and consistency over time and across the entire menu.

What a MICHELIN Star Means for Walt Disney World

This recognition is about much more than just one restaurant – it represents a significant milestone in Disney’s evolution as a vacation destination. When Walt Disney World opened in 1971, few would have imagined that it would someday host a restaurant worthy of international culinary recognition. This achievement speaks to how far Disney has come in redefining what a theme park resort can offer.

The Team Behind the Magic

What makes this achievement even more special is knowing the passionate team that makes it happen night after night. Chef de Cuisine Matthew Sowers, who has spent nearly two decades perfecting his craft at Victoria & Albert’s, summed it up perfectly: “Every single member of our team is part of this success. Their unwavering dedication and passion for excellence has made this possible.”

And let’s not forget Israel Perez, who received MICHELIN’s 2024 Florida Service Award. The man has been crafting unforgettable dining moments at Walt Disney World for over 20 years and ensures that every guest experience is nothing short of extraordinary. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times during our visits, and let me tell you – his knowledge and service approach elevate the meal to a whole new level.

Beyond the Star

What many visitors don’t realize is that Victoria & Albert’s isn’t just resting on its MICHELIN laurels. The restaurant is the only location in Florida to hold both the AAA Five Diamond award (consistently since 2000) and the Forbes Travel Guide Five Star award (since 2018). They’ve also been honored with the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence.

Elevating Disney’s Culinary Reputation

Victoria & Albert’s maintaining its MICHELIN star does something remarkable for Walt Disney World’s reputation as a whole. It fundamentally changes how the culinary world views what many still think of as “theme park food.” This recognition positions Disney as a legitimate player in the fine dining scene, not just a place for churros and turkey legs.

The MICHELIN recognition gives Walt Disney World something that few other vacation destinations can claim: the full spectrum of dining experiences from casual quick-service to genuine world-class cuisine. This breadth shows Disney’s commitment to excellence across all price points and dining styles.

Think about what this means for guests planning a vacation. You can now literally experience everything from a $6 Mickey pretzel to a $600 MICHELIN-starred dining experience without ever leaving Disney property. That’s a remarkable achievement for a vacation destination.

What to Expect When You Visit

For those planning a special celebration (and at these prices, it better be special!), here’s what you need to know:

  • The Experience: This is a leisurely 3-hour culinary journey, not a quick pre-fireworks dinner. The Dining Room offers a 7-course “Tasting Menu” starting at $295 per person.
  • Wine Pairings: Optional, but highly recommended. Wine pairings start at $155, with zero-proof options at $115 for non-drinkers.
  • Dress Code: Semi-formal to formal attire is required. Leave those Mickey ears and flip-flops at the resort room!
  • Reservation Strategy: Book exactly 60 days in advance as soon as the window opens (typically 6:00 AM). These tables are harder to get than a Rise of the Resistance boarding group was back in the day!
  • Age Requirement: Guests must be 10 years or older. This has been the policy since 2008, so plan accordingly.

My Personal Take

Having celebrated multiple anniversaries at Victoria & Albert’s, I can tell you it’s worth every penny. The attention to detail is extraordinary – personalized menus, synchronized service, and culinary creations that are as beautiful as they are delicious.

What makes V&A special in the Disney context is how it manages to maintain that Disney magic while delivering a world-class fine dining experience. It’s the perfect marriage of Disney’s legendary service culture and haute cuisine.

Is it expensive? Absolutely. The full experience with wine pairings will set you back about $500 per person after tax and gratuity. But compared to other MICHELIN-starred restaurants around the world, it’s actually competitively priced (though that might not comfort your wallet much).

What This Means for Disney’s Future

I believe Victoria & Albert’s MICHELIN success signals something important about Disney’s approach to guest experiences. It demonstrates that Disney isn’t content to rest on its laurels or rely solely on its theme park fame. Instead, they’re pushing boundaries and pursuing recognition in areas where theme parks aren’t traditionally known to excel.

This approach is likely to extend beyond dining. We’re seeing Disney invest in increasingly premium experiences across the board. The message is clear: Disney wants to be known for excellence at every level, not just family-friendly fun.

Final Thoughts

Victoria & Albert’s retaining its MICHELIN star confirms what many of us Disney foodies have known for years – that Disney’s culinary program extends far beyond turkey legs and Dole Whips. From its humble beginnings when it opened alongside the Grand Floridian in 1988 to becoming a MICHELIN-starred destination, V&A represents Disney’s commitment to excellence in all aspects of the guest experience.

So if you’re planning that special celebration, anniversary, or simply want to experience the pinnacle of Disney dining, Victoria & Albert’s deserves a spot on your Disney bucket list. Just be prepared to plan far in advance, dress your best, and yes – open your wallet wide. But trust me on this one – some Disney experiences are worth the splurge, and this is definitely one of them.

Beyond the Accolades: A Cultural Shift

Victoria & Albert’s MICHELIN achievement reflects a broader cultural shift in how we view theme park destinations. Walt Disney World is no longer just a place where families go for character meet-and-greets and roller coasters. It’s increasingly becoming a culinary destination in its own right.

For those who love Disney but also appreciate fine dining, this validation means you no longer have to choose between the two when planning your vacation. You can have your Dole Whip in the afternoon and your MICHELIN experience in the evening. This expansion of Disney’s culinary horizons makes the resort more attractive to guests who might previously have dismissed it as offering only theme park fare.
