Quick Take: Save valuable suitcase space and skip packing basic toiletries (hotels provide them), fancy clothes (unless dining at Victoria & Albert’s), and that heavy DSLR camera (your phone is probably fine). Read on for money-saving details and exceptions!
The Essential “Don’t Pack” List
✓ Basic toiletries (provided by hotels)
✓ Swimsuit (unless specifically planning pool time)
✓ Formal wear (except for signature dining)
✓ DSLR camera (phone cameras work great)
✓ Books (you won’t have time)
✓ Extra shoes (stick to 2 comfortable pairs)

1. Skip Hotel Toiletries (And Save Money!)
Disney resorts provide high-quality basics including:
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Body wash
- Hand soap
- Basic face soap
Exception: Pack only specialty items you absolutely need (specific hair products, special face creams, etc.)
Money-Saving Tip: Stop buying those travel-size toiletries! I’ve wasted countless dollars on items that just made the round trip unused. If you have a body wash you like back home, bring it in a travel container.
2. Leave the DSLR at Home
Your phone is probably all you need because:
- Modern smartphones take amazing photos
- Disney PhotoPass photographers can capture family shots
- You won’t want to carry heavy equipment all day
Exception: Bring the big camera only if you’re:
- A serious photographer
- Planning specific photo shoots
- Comfortable carrying extra gear all day
3. Forget the Fancy Clothes
Unless you’re dining at Victoria & Albert’s or California Grill, skip formal wear. A clean polo and non-wrinkle slacks work everywhere else.
Pro Tip: Nice shorts and a clean shirt are perfectly fine at 95% of Disney restaurants!

For the Full Planners (Who Read This Far!)
If you’re still reading, here are some deeper insights:
About Those Swimsuits:
Only pack if you’re:
- Staying 5+ days
- Have specific pool plans
- Visiting in peak summer
- Traveling with pool-loving kids
About Those Books:
Trust me – your schedule will be too full for reading. Even travel guides usually stay in the suitcase (yes, I’ve packed the 500-page Walt Disney biography… multiple times).
- Bring a book you’re comfortable leaving behind.
- Download a book onto your phone.
Remember: These tips come from my many (sometimes overpacked) Disney trips. Your needs might vary, but I hope this helps you pack lighter and smarter!

5 More Things You Can Skip Packing for Disney (From Someone Who Learned the Hard Way)
1. Multiple Magic Bands
Why People Pack It: “But what if one breaks? What if it gets wet? What if the battery dies?”
Reality Check: Your phone works as your Disney key now! Plus, Magic Bands are incredibly durable and water-resistant. I’ve never had one fail in hundreds of park days. If you’re really worried, you can always buy one there, and it can be an updated version.
Money-Saving Tip: Skip packing old Magic Bands entirely and just use your phone with the Disney app!
2. Full-Size Umbrella
Why People Pack It: Florida rain is no joke!
Reality Check: That giant umbrella will become your arch-nemesis in crowded parks. Disney sells perfect pocket-sized ponchos everywhere, and most park shops have small umbrellas if you need one. Plus, Florida rain usually passes quickly.
Pro Tip: A cheap umbrella from your local dollar store works great and takes minimal space, AND you can leave it behind!
3. Extra Phone Chargers
Why People Pack It: “I need my backup battery pack, wall charger, car charger, and that weird charger from 2015…”
Reality Check: One good portable battery pack is enough. Disney has added charging stations throughout the parks, and most quick service locations have outlets. Plus, most hotels now have USB ports built into the rooms.
Tech Tip: One 20,000mAh battery pack will last multiple days and can charge multiple devices.

4. Multiple Pairs of Mouse Ears
Why People Pack It: “I need options for different outfits!”
Reality Check: You’ll likely stick to one favorite pair, and let’s be honest – half the fun is buying new ones in the parks! They take up surprising amounts of luggage space and can get crushed.
Shopping Tip: Park ears are often better quality than third-party ones anyway, and they make great souvenirs!
5. “Just In Case” Medicine Cabinet
Why People Pack It: “Better safe than sorry with every possible medication!”
Reality Check: Disney has first aid centers in every park with common over-the-counter medications available for free. Plus, there’s a pharmacy delivery service to Disney resorts.
Pack Only:
- Your prescription medications
- Your most commonly used pain reliever
- Any specialized medications you regularly need
Emergency Tip: Every Disney park has a full First Aid station with nurses who can help with basic medical needs and provide common medications.
The Real Must-Pack Instead
Save that suitcase space for things you’ll actually use:
- Comfortable walking shoes, like Crocs (that you’ve broken in!)
- Phone battery pack
- Small ziplock bags (great for phones on water rides)
- Portable fan in summer
- Basic pain reliever
Remember: Disney World has pretty much everything you might need available for purchase. When in doubt, leave it out!
