Ah, Central Florida in the summer – a magical blend of Disney enchantment and sweat-soaked clothes. But fear not, you brave soul! With these tips, you’ll conquer the parks like a pro, even when the weather feels like it’s trying to melt you into a Mickey-shaped puddle.
Because you will melt. It’s going to happen. You will be sweaty on levels that you never knew was available.
1. Pack Like You’re Going to a Humid Sauna (Because You Are)
- Double up on essentials: Pack twice the shirts, socks, and undergarments you think you’ll need. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself when you’re not feeling “blah” by day’s end.
- Lightweight is the way: Opt for breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics. Leave the jeans at home unless you enjoy that “wet denim” look. Big fan of the “active” line from True Classic or golf shirts.
- Fresh Air: Consider packing a small spray bottle with cooling mist. It’s like having a portable air conditioner!
2. Footwear: Your Feet’s Best Friends

- Adventure sandals: These are game-changers. They can handle the miles, the rain, and won’t leave you with that lovely “swamp foot” feeling.
- Crocs: For those of you who know me, I’m deep into the Crocs world. This last trip, I spent the trip in two pairs of Crocs LiteRide, which are great with the weather and also with the fashion.
- New insight: Bring moleskin or blister pads. Even the comfiest shoes can betray you after 20,000 steps.
3. Hats: Sun Protection with Style

- UV protection is key: Look for hats with built-in sun protection. Your scalp will thank you.
- Avoid the dreaded “hat tan”: Take it off periodically to even out your tan and let your head breathe. I tend to go back and forth between wearing the hat backwards and normal.
- New insight: Consider a wide-brimmed hat for extra face and neck protection.
4. Embrace the Air Conditioning
- Strategic cool-downs: Plan your route to include indoor attractions and shops for regular AC breaks.
- Don’t be a heat hero: Pushing through without breaks isn’t brave, it’s a recipe for heatstroke. You’re in Florida, so don’t think you’re going to out-do your limits.
- New insight: Learn the locations of indoor relaxation spots in each park. They’re perfect for recharging your phone (and yourself).

5. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
- Free ice water: Take advantage of this at quick-service locations and the resort mug refill stations.
- Invest in a good water bottle: I swear by my Swell bottle. It keeps drinks cold for 24 hours!
- New insight: Try electrolyte tablets or powders to add to your water. They’ll help replace what you’re sweating out.
6. Master the Mid-Day Break
- Sample schedule:
- 8am-11am: Theme park
- 11am-1pm: Lunch break
- 1-3pm: Resort break (shower, nap, pool time)
- 4pm-close: Back to the parks
- Evening: Disney Springs or shopping
- Quick refresh: If you can’t leave the park, duck into a restroom to change shirts and reapply deodorant and sunscreen.
- New insight: Use this break to enjoy your resort’s amenities. Many have great pools or activities that are worth experiencing! We spend more time at Disney Springs or on a resort loop, like the Monorail Resort Loop or the Skyliner Loop.
7. Embrace the Rain (Because It’s Coming)

- Be prepared: Pack compact ponchos and a small umbrella.
- Know your indoor options: Familiarize yourself with nearby indoor attractions or shops in each area of the parks. There are spots that you should aim for in all the parks, including the main gift shops in the parks, like Creations Shop in EPCOT and The Emporium in the Magic Kingdom.
- New insight: Download a good weather app with radar. It can help you predict when showers will hit and how long they’ll last. Don’t always believe the weather network!
8. Strategic Planning with Lightning Lane and Dining
- Early and late reservations: Aim for lunch ADRs around 11:30am or 1:45pm, and dinner at 4:45pm or after 7pm.
- Evening flexibility: Save your Lightning Lane selections for earlier in the day. Evenings often have shorter lines naturally.
- New insight: Consider booking a late-night dessert party. It’s a great way to end the day with a sweet treat and avoid the worst of the heat.
9. Water Park Wisdom
- Lightning awareness: Be prepared for outdoor attraction closures during thunderstorms
- Sunscreen strategy: Opt for spray sunscreen for easy reapplication.
- Footwear matters: Bring water shoes to protect your feet from hot pavement. We also enjoy Crocs, because they are great with the rain!
- New insight: Rent a locker to keep your valuables dry and secure while you enjoy the water.
10. Pre-Trip Prep
- Acclimate gradually: Take midday walks in the weeks before your trip to help your body adjust.
- Know your limits: Be aware of heat exhaustion symptoms and listen to your body.
- New insight: Practice using a portable fan or misting device before your trip. It’ll be second nature by the time you hit the parks.
When I worked in the Canadian Pavilion at EPCOT, the summer heat was something that we became accustomed to over time, but it’s difficult to train your body if you’re only there for a week.
Remember, conquering Disney World in the summer is all about preparation, flexibility, and a good sense of humour. With these tips, you’ll be ready to make magical memories, even when the weather feels more “Hades” than “Elsa.”
