I spend a lot of time thinking about recommendations and trip planning, so I thought it’d be helpful to put together this guide on overrated rides at Walt Disney World. Before we dive in, let me tell you why this topic is so important to me.
We spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to go on a vacation to Walt Disney World, but with over 80% of guests not being locals (i.e., within 100 miles), it’s crucial to find the best uses of your time. I’ve compiled this list to help you make informed decisions about which rides might not be worth those long wait times.
For each attraction, I’ll share my personal “cut-off time” – that’s the maximum amount of time I’d be willing to wait WITHOUT a Genie+ or Individual Lightning Lane reservation. So, let’s get started with our magical (or not so magical) journey!
THE CURRENT LIST OF THE TOP 10 OVERRATED RIDES AT DISNEY WORLD

- Toy Story Mania

1. Seven Dwarfs Mine Train

- Cut-off Time: 30 Minutes
- Average Wait Time: 90 minutes to almost 3 hours (yikes!)
Editor’s Note: I actually love this ride!
But here’s the thing – for an attraction with such insane wait times, it’s hard to justify standing in line for hours. In fact, the only time I ride it is when I’m rope dropping it… and yes, that includes during special events like Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party.
Fun fact: This attraction was actually an afterthought when New Fantasyland was announced. It was originally going to house multiple princess meet & greet locations. After a change in Disney Parks Leadership, the plan was scrapped to bring an experience that would appeal to both boys and girls. Who knew?
It’ll be interesting to see how Tron affects these wait times!
2. Toy Story Midway Mania

- Cut-off Time: 30 Minutes
I have a blanket rule: screen-based rides don’t belong at Walt Disney World. There are exceptions (hello, Flight of Passage!), but this attraction is basically just a video game… and one that I own for the Nintendo Wii!
Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun. It’s great for kids of all ages and lets older kids (like me) play video games at Disney. But is it a good attraction in a theme park filled with other experiences, or does it just seem great because Hollywood Studios has limited options right now?
Here’s a missed opportunity: Park Management could have improved Pixar Place by expanding into the empty building next door. Instead of creating something new and exciting (Monster’s Inc Roller Coaster, anyone?), they just added a 3rd track for Genie+ users. Sigh.
3. It’s a Small World
- Cut-off Time: 5 Minutes
Unpopular opinion alert: It’s a Small World is one of the most overrated attractions at Walt Disney World! I try to ride it each vacation, but let’s be honest here.
Yes, Walt Disney had his hands on the original version for the 1965 New York World’s Fair. But why is the Magic Kingdom version so… untouchable? The Disneyland improvements, like adding Disney characters (Stitch, etc.), have been met with resistance from fans and park leadership. As a result, our version feels dated and shabby, especially compared to New Fantasyland’s whiz-bang experiences.
4. Tomorrowland Speedway

- Cut-off Time: 20 Minutes
This one’s pretty self-explanatory, right? The vehicles are far from energy-efficient or futuristic. You’d probably get a better go-kart experience at your local track!
Here’s my beef: attractions in the Magic Kingdom should enhance the story of their “themed land.” Tomorrowland Speedway feels like it doesn’t fit anywhere. It’s not revolutionary or futuristic, and it has zero ties to fairytales. Identity crisis, much?
5. Kali River Rapids

- Cut-off Time: 20 Minutes
Want to know why this attraction is never top of mind when planning a day at Animal Kingdom? It feels short! Thanks to budget issues when the park first opened, the ride was actually shortened by 50%. You get one “thrill,” one “oh” moment with the deforestation storyline, and… that’s about it.
Honestly, my favorite part is pushing the green button in the exit line to soak guests already on the ride. Petty? Maybe. Fun? Absolutely!

6. Magic Carpets of Aladdin
- Cut-off Time: 5 Minutes
Space in the Magic Kingdom is precious (it is the most visited theme park in the world, after all). So why, oh why, do we need another aerial carousel-style ride when we already have Dumbo?
As an Aladdin fan (one of my favorite movies of all time!), this is such a disappointment. Just imagine the potential for an excellent Dark Ride. Instead, we get… this.
7. Na’vi River Journey
- Cut-off Time: 30 Minutes
New doesn’t always mean better, folks. Think “Jungle Cruise without the story” and add a ton of black lights. It’s not even in the same league as Flight of Passage, yet you’re forced to choose between them when planning your Genie+ day. Choose wisely, or it could put a real damper on your vacation!
8. Mad Tea Party

- Cut-off Time: 10 Minutes
Round and round it goes – when it stops, you’ll regret having that churro before! Seriously though, it’s a basic tea cup ride with very little theming and nothing memorable about it. Unless you count the queasiness.
9. Test Track

- Cut-off Time: 30 Minutes
Okay, I’ll admit the thrill ride part is a ton of fun! It’s the fastest ride at Walt Disney World, so speed demons won’t be disappointed.
But here’s the skinny – it’s basically a giant Chevrolet commercial, complete with high-pressure salespeople at the end. The original GM version was better themed to EPCOT, focusing on education and entertainment about transportation. Test Track 2.0? A ride with little storyline and stripped-down elements that don’t enhance the experience. Progress isn’t always progress, folks.
Just imagine what the next iteration will be!
10. Alien Swirling Saucers

- Cut-off Time: 5 Minutes
This list constantly changes, so this is a new addition. For years, I enjoyed this experience but when you start to see the maintenance issues match the unreliability of the ride, it’s overrated.
We’ve actually seen the wait time be 5 minutes for it to end up being 30 minutes, and it’s not an attraction that you’ll ever walk off feeling like it enhanced your vacation. No one will ever talk about it as a highlight, so that put it here.
There you have it – my Top 10 Overrated Rides at Disney World. I hope this info helps with your trip planning and lets you make the most of your magical (and expensive) vacation. Remember, these are just my opinions based on years of Disney-going experience. Your mileage may vary, but at least now you’re prepared!
